The Boss 351 (1971) and 351 High Output (1972) had adjustable, stud-mounted rocker arms. The rest had bolt-fulcrum style, no-adjust, stamped steel rocker arms as found on small-block Fords 1978-up. I then went and bought a gear reduction starter for a 93 Ford and the noise is just as bad if not worse. A friend mentioned the cleveland never came with the small bellhousing, so I'm not sure if this is the problem or not.

If the indicator reads 0.010-inch, this is outward movement of the same distance. We prefer to zero the indicator at the 12 o’clock position and then check concentricity every 90 degrees. There are 2 different starters for the 289 -- one for an auto transmission (smaller 157-tooth flexplate), the other for a manual (larger 164-tooth flywheel). They look similar.
