Blocker was born in De Kalb, Texas, United States, the son of Ora "Shack" Blocker and Mary Arizona Blocker, née Davis. As a boy, he attended Texas Military Institute. In 1940, he enrolled in Hardin-Simmons University and Sul Ross State University and earned a degree in speech and drama.
